Property Description

The 150 year old Pajara is a typical example of “vernacular architecture” developed by local farmers of the Salento region. At a time when every meter of land mattered, families expanded their farms by pulling stones out of the rocky ground until they created viable soil. They found a use for those stones, in building Pajaras for the purpose of having a refuge from the summer heat. Form followed function, as the builders conceived of a barrel vaulted ceiling to help hot air escape through the top, making the inside naturally cool and fresh. We renovated the house for modern comforts, while maintaining the original design and rich historic elements. The pajara has two rooms and a large (60 square meters) shaded patio overlooking the vegetable and fruit garden, the olive trees and the sea. The main room has a double bed and a bathroom with a shower. The second room next to it is a fully equipped kitchen. The patio has a large wooden table with chairs, a cooking area with a stone sink and a fire place with barbecue, and two hammocks to enjoy and watch the stars at night.

Natalie Arseni

I’m an art and design lover, traveler, foody, I love to discover cities and countries through food and the arts. My family started the renovations of 3 abandoned stone houses ten years ago. We renovated them using sustainable architecture and we worked with local artisans for the furniture. The stone houses are in the same area and each one can accommodate a couple. They are the ideal destination to enjoy some relaxing time of digital detox.
