Property Description

A holiday for nature lovers & gourmands alike.
The property is in the Costal National Park Otranto-Leuca at the centre of the beautiful Salento region of Apulia, famous for the beauty of its towns, countryside and sea. The house is on 2.5 acres of land, rich with olive, fig, orange and almond trees, as well as an organic vegetable & fruit garden. All food growing on the land, as well as our home-made olive oil & tomato sauce, is available for our guests to enjoy. Marittima centre, 1km away, has 4 cafes, a pharmacy and 3 grocery stores. By day you can lie on the beach, go sailing, biking and scuba diving in the natural caves or take a break at the spas of Santa Cesarea Terme. By night you can get lost in the beautiful architecture of Lecce (the Florence of the South) or have fun in the nearby medieval villages of Otranto, Gallipoli and Castro with their restaurants and nightlife.
The 300 year old Pajara is a typical example of “vernacular architecture” developed by local farmers of the Salento region. At a time when every meter of land mattered, families expanded their farms by pulling stones out of the rocky ground until they created viable soil. They found a use for those stones, in building Pajaras for the purpose of having a refuge from the summer heat. Form followed function, as the builders conceived of a barrel vaulted ceiling to help hot air escape through the top, making the inside naturally cool and fresh. In 2007 the house was renovated for modern comforts, while maintaining the original design and rich historic elements. The pajara constitues one large furnished room with a double bed (room for an additional single bed, baby crib) and a fully equipped kitchenette. Its high vaulted original barrel ceiling along with the one meter thick stone walls keep the room naturally cool and luminous. Outside, a large patio offers a dinning area (table, chairs, lounge chairs) equipped with a stone sink, cooking surface and a big barbecue as well as an outside shower. The large bathroom with vaulted ceiling has a second shower. The roof of the pajara offers a stunning view of the sea and of the garden, an ideal setting for a sunset aperitivo.

Natalie Arseni

I’m an art and design lover, traveler, foody, I love to discover cities and countries through food and the arts. My family started the renovations of 3 abandoned stone houses ten years ago. We renovated them using sustainable architecture and we worked with local artisans for the furniture. The stone houses are in the same area and each one can accommodate a couple. They are the ideal destination to enjoy some relaxing time of digital detox.
